Amarula Cream: If it’s good enough for elephants, it’s good enough for you

Amarula Cream liqueur is a delicious blend of the unique flavors of the marula fruit and fresh cream, including touches of chocolate, caramel, and a hint of butterscotch. The Marula Tree and its exotic fruit are at the heart of Amarula Cream.

From tree to bottle, it takes over two years to create each bottle of Amarula Cream Liqueur. The key ingredient, the marula fruit, is considered one of Africa’s botanical treasures. This exotic fruit, harvested by hand, gives Amarula its distinctive taste and smooth, silky texture. The marula tree (or as it is called locally, “Elephant Tree”) only grows in one area on the entire planet–the warm, frost-free regions of subequatorial Africa. It holds a position of importance both in the animal kingdom and in human legend and ritual.

Once the ripe, yellow marula fruit has been gathered, the stones are removed, and the flesh is separated from the skin before it is fermented under conditions similar to winemaking. After fermentation, the marula wine is distilled, first in column stills and then in copper pot ones. It is aged in French oak for two years and blended with velvety cream to create the smooth taste of Amarula Cream Liqueur.

Amarula is best served over ice but can also be enjoyed with hot chocolate or coffee and in a wide variety of cocktails. At 17% ABV, it is comparable to other cream liqueurs.

If you’re a Bailey’s fan, it’s definitely worth a try.

Elephants enjoy eating the marula fruit. Because of the marula tree’s association with elephants, the distiller has made them its symbol and supports elephant conservation efforts, co-funding the Amarula Elephant Research Program at the University of Natal, Durban.
