Dictador Rums: A Dictador you’ll gladly serve

Although infamous for other endeavors, Columbia has a burgeoning distilling industry. One company in particular, Dictador, has started to invade the Colorado region with two particularly mouthwatering products.

Dictador Colombian rums are made from the fermentation of virgin sugar cane honey, distilled partly in copper alembic and partly in steel continuous column stills to achieve smooth bodied rums with rich, complex flavor profiles. They are then aged in pre-used oak barrels and brought to bottling strength with demineralized water, added in drops over a period of 28 days. They are a combination of high quality aged rum, innovative European design, and state of the art Japanese bottles.

Their award-winning rums aren’t for wasting on cola. These are luxury sipping rums at an upper-mid level price. In terms of value, you should think of them like tropical Scotches.

The Dictador 12 Year Old Colombian Rum is blended with rums aged between 8 and 14 years, with an average age of 12 years. It is rich amber in color with reddish legs. It carries a bold nose of butterscotch, caramel, and lightly roasted coffee, leading to a soft, well-rounded mouthfeel with a complex palate melody of cocoa, toffee, espresso bean, and oak. Hints of candied fruit appear on the long, subtly sweet finish with a touch of oak.

Dictador 20 Year Old Colombian Rum has been matured for 20 years in the solera system, resulting in an intensely dark amber spirit. The nose opens with sweet aromas of soft caramel, toffee, vanilla, and honey, balanced by undertones of tobacco and oak. Its impressively silken, mellow texture displays distinctive notes of vanilla, toffee, dark chocolate, caramel, and roasted coffee, accented by a lingering touch of cinnamon and smoked cedar in its finish.
