Hahn SLH Pinot Noir is A-OK

Hahn SLH (for Santa Lucia Highlands) is a pinot noir of remarkable quality.

This estate wine is produced entirely in the Santa Lucia Highlands where the nearby windswept mountains near the Pacific Ocean experience a long growing season, contributing a depth and complexity in their wines.

Hahn founder Nicky Hahn speared headed the movement to have this area deemed a unique winegrowing district. In 1991, the federal government approved the Highlands as an official American Viticultural Area (AVA). Today, Hahn SLH Pinot Noir and Chardonnay come entirely from their estate in this breathtakingly beautiful region of Monterey County. The fruit is grown in their family-owned vineyards and the wine is barrel-aged in French oak in the winery’s cellar.

For the Hahn SLH Pinot Noir, their winemakers select grapes that yields the most expressive aromas and flavors. After the fruit is carefully sorted, it undergoes a three-day cold soak in open top stainless-steel fermenting tanks. It is then aged for 11 months in a selection of 60-gallon French oak barrels. When the wine is ready to be blended, they choose barrels that they feel best exemplified the aromas, flavors, and structure of the Santa Lucia Highlands.

Hahn SLH Pinot Noir carries aromas of bright red cherry and strawberry with hints of earth, spices, and toasty oak. An explosion of red fruit flavors such as strawberry, cherry, and raspberry lead to a long finish with refined, supple tannins, and a soft mouthfeel.

Saturday Tasting – “You Had Me at Pinot Noir”

This Saturday, January 5, Wyatt’s is offering a free tasting of select Pinot Noirs.

Pinot Noir is a wine that goes well with all types of food, and is even light enough in alcohol to be enjoyed on its own.

Saturday, we will be sampling these fine Pinots:

Angels Landing – From the Sonoma Coast, this wine has a beautiful garnet color with wild violets on the nose. Medium bodied and supple with flavors of ripened raspberries, cranapples, and Bing cherries with a touch of birch bark.

Aresti -This wine from the Casablanca Valley is expressive with sweet notes of cherry jam, anise, and cinnamon, blended with vanilla and mocha. Its good body fills the mouth with flavors of camelized fruit and generous tannins from French oak. Experience it with fish, especially tuna, pork dishes, or pasta.

Baus Family – Leading with a nice dark translucent garnet color with long legs and a light rose aroma, Baus has pepper notes with some hibiscus with a very slight oaky vanilla bouquet. Smooth and enjoyable.

Pleasures – Delicate, yet fruit forward with strawberry, cherry and sweet spice flavors, the wine ends with firm, ripe tannins and a malt and toffee finish. A great wine to have with Ahi tuna seared rare, veggie burgers on seeded rolls, and colorful mixed green salads topped with grilled chicken and cherry tomatoes.

Tasting hours for this event will be from noon-4:45 pm, at Wyatt’s Outlaw Saloon, in the back of the store.

There’s always room for Cherry Pie Pinot Noir

Combining three vineyards, each with their own unique flavor profile, innovative winemaker Jayson Woodbridge, the creator of such cult favorites as Hundred Acre and Layer Cake wines, has produced Cherry Pie Pinot Noir.

Cherry Pie Pinot was an experiment that he had yearned to make for years. The result was an easy drinking, extremely food-friendly, luscious wine with intense aromatics and a great acidity.

The 2015 Cherry Pie Pinot Noir jumps from the glass with aromas of raspberry, nutmeg, sandalwood and light smokiness, lifted by a floral note. Silky and delicate up front, it carries a ripe acidity framing the rich, sweet flavors of red berries, and finishing with touches of red cherry and earth.

Its pleasing jammy, red fruit and soft palate textures make it a perfect cocktail hour or pizza wine.
